Planned tool
CIS rebate calculator for UK subcontractors.
This calculator is planned, not live yet. The goal is simple: help UK subcontractors estimate whether CIS deducted through the year may turn into a tax refund after expenses and self-assessment.
What the calculator will estimate
Gross subcontractor income
Total CIS income across the tax year before deductions.
CIS already deducted
The amount contractors have withheld and paid to HMRC.
Allowable expenses
Tools, materials, van costs, insurance, phone, workwear and other business costs.
Estimated rebate
A plain-English estimate of whether too much tax has been collected up front.
Background
How CIS rebates work
Under the Construction Industry Scheme, contractors deduct tax from a subcontractor's labour payments before the subcontractor receives the money. For most registered subcontractors the rate is 20%. Unregistered subcontractors are usually deducted at 30%.
That deduction is not the final tax bill. At the end of the tax year, your income, business expenses, personal allowance and any other income are reconciled through self-assessment. If the CIS deducted was higher than the final tax due, HMRC may refund the difference.
While this page waits for the full rebate calculator, you can use the CIS calculator for individual invoices and keep a running record of deductions shown on your contractor payment statements.
